Five-figure flurry at Shannons' winter auction
Prized Aussie and American muscle high on the hit list for Melbourne winter auctionA wide range of quality, no-reserve classic vehicles at the recent Shannons Melbourne Winter Auction has seen a number of Aussie and American muscle cars go under the hammer, most achieving substantial five-figure results.
Topping the list, a 1971 Ford XY Falcon GT brought $90,000 after initially being offered with no reserve. Owned by the same family since near-new, this very original 'Bronze Wine Metallic' example had only 38,138 miles on the clock, drawing frantic bidding both on the floor and over the phone.
Holden fans too had their chance to bid, a classic HQ duo performing well after heated bidding. A 1972 GTS 350 coupe in 'March 17 Green' fetched an impressive $77,000 while a 1973 GTS 308 sedan grabbed $29,000. A third Holden, a 1976 LX Torana SL/R 5000 sedan in 'Mint Julip Green', sold for $24,000 after again being offered with no reserve.
American muscle cars also performed well on the night, a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach I Fastback brought $45,500, a 1971 Pontiac Formula 'Replica' Coupe $24,000 and a 1966 Ford Mustang 'A Code' Coupe achieved $19,000.
Further, a number of classic British models saw some surprising results; a fully restored 'Coombs Standard' 1966 Jaguar Mk 2 sold for $51,000; a 1991 Daimler DS420 Limousine for $34,000; and a lovingly restored 1950 Bentley Mk VI achieved $27,000.
Elsewhere in the long list of sporting classics, a very desirable 1969 Porsche 911T 2.2 Coupe sold for $50,000 while further back in time, a restored 1929 Packard 626 'Standard 8' Rumble Seat Coupe sold for $65,000, a genuine 1928 Studebaker Erskine Coupe for $18,000, and a recently-recommissioned right-hand drive 1933 Chrysler CO Sedan made $17,000.
Amongst the classic motorcycles on offer, a unique 1950s Norvin 500 Custom that combined the engine of a 500cc Vincent Single with a Norton gearbox in a Norton Featherbed frame sold for $30,000. Meanwhile a very original 1972 T150 Trident 750 brought $13,500 and a rare 1964 Gilera 'Sei Giori' Speciale 124cc racing bike with matching numbers sold for $5500.
