Five fun games to play on your holiday road trip

Holiday road trip entertainment for the whole family, device free!

Have kids, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. And it is! But road trips are a whole other ball game.

There are no limits to which your children will go to test your patience when they know that your ability to respond with gusto is hamstrung behind the wheel of the family car.

There’s an easy solution though: Give them your undivided attention.

Here are our top five favourite games to play with the kids (or any passengers, for that matter) to encourage some old-school entertainment… of the device-free, conversational variety.

Who am I/Twenty Questions

Pick a category and go. Yes or no answers only. It’s a simple one that’s fun and even quite young kids can play this one. Everyone loves it when Dad pretends he’s Beyonce.

Spotto

It was called punch-buggy when I was a kid but the likelihood of seeing many Volkswagen Beetles on the road these days is slim, so we adapt. Simply choose your car make/model/colour and get counting. Warning, the potential for cheating on this one is immense.

I Spy

This is the ultimate road trip game, right? Be sure to set the rules, however. Everyone must be able to see it and is it inside or outside the car, for example!

It’s like a good old game of spotto, but we’ve done the hard work for you by setting out a bunch of things to find on your road trip, from kangaroos to caravans.

Cross them off as you go. First to get them all, wins! Download the worksheet here.

Alphabet Animals

A time-based challenge to name a certain amount of animals beginning with a nominated letter. You’ve got 30 seconds to name three animals beginning with the letter ‘L’. Go! It sounds easy, but it’s not!
