Go Karts may be small but they are potent and tons of fun thanks to direct steering, just enough power for novices and nimble handling. The good news is there are plenty of purpose-built tracks and karts to hire near (or in) Sydney for anyone with a fistful of dollars to spare, so here are five to try.
Sydney’s home of motorsport is, perhaps not surprisingly, the place where you’ll find a pretty serious karting venue that welcomes weekend warriors. Eastern Creek Karting sits alongside the main circuit and its high-grip track is long, with various configurations its flagship Sodi RT8 karts are fast with around 80km/h top-speed available. Pop in for lap sessions of 10, 20 or 30 minutes (the g-forces will get to novices after that!) or book a party or corporate team-bonding event.
Picton Karting Track’s claims to being “Australia’s best outdoor kart track” could be spot-on as this scenic county circuit is 640 metres long with a combination of fast, sweeping corners and challenging hairpins. The 190-metre straight is where their fastest 125cc two-stroke Rotax-powered kart can reach a heady 110km/h and you feel every bit of it an inch off the ground. More sedate karts and two-seaters are available for beginners and young ’uns, making the trip down the Hume well worthwhile.
A butterfly farm on the peaceful banks of the Hawkesbury River seems an unlikely location for some on-track action but at Indy 800 you get just that. This is a serious track: 800 metres long, eight metres wide and enough twists and turns to bamboozle a pro. Hire karts are available, of course, or you can bring your own.
If Hyper Karting had only one thing going for it, close proximity to central Sydney would be it. This indoor karting track is in Moore Park, a stone’s throw from the CBD and SCG, is 410 metres in length (the longest indoor course in Australia) and offers a variety of challenging corners. The karts themselves are electric RiMOs from Germany meaning no fumes and instantly available torque out of the turns. There’s also a virtual reality shoot-’em-up games room for a dose of non-contact entertainment.
It’s worth the short drive south of Sydney to Fastlane Karting thanks to its challenging outdoor circuit that, at 580 metres long, gives drivers a chance to stretch the legs of the Honda-powered RiMO EVO6 karts available for hire. For those who like their action sideways, some are set up in ‘drift’ configuration and at the other end of the experience scale, there’s a smaller 180-metre kids’ track with pee-wee karts and twin-seaters on offer.
