Five great cars for keen golfers

Want to hit the golf course in style? Fancy a fast getaway from your next game?

Driving is a critical element in the game of golf. And so is driving. Because, unless you live next door to your local course, you’ll need a car to get there and back that has plenty of room for the clubs.

But not every golfer has a green jacket and the kind of green that comes with a Masters victory to afford a tour bus as well as a collection of supercars.

So, here are five cars that would make the perfect putting companion.

Volkswagen Golf R Wagon

We couldn’t ignore the one car that has Golf written all over it – literally. And you definitely cannot ignore the credentials of the Volkswagen Golf R, especially in station wagon form.

Like an albatross, this car – a family-friendly load lugger that can carry a bootload of golf clubs but with the heart of a high-performance hot hatch that scares supercars away from the lights - is rare and thoroughly rewarding.

It’s a genuine rocket ship, but it’s also totally unassuming in everyday traffic, with a classy and spacious cabin, the latest in advanced safety systems and infotainment technology and multi-stage adaptive suspension that can be adjusted between comfort and sporty settings.

While the hatchback is the most popular option and has a decent boot, the wagon is the perfect caddy for a fast-driving golfer with 611L of storage capacity in a five-seat configuration and up to 1642L with the rear seats folded flat.

Skoda Octavia Wagon

Even a small quiver of clubs requires plenty of boot space, which is why traditional station wagons make an excellent choice for golfers. The Skoda Octavia Wagon sets the benchmark for this shrinking segment, offering more room, improved driving dynamics and lower fuel consumption than most SUV alternatives.

Think of it as a four-wheeled five-iron. It might not get you down the fairway the fastest or have the precision required to chip onto the green. But, like a five-iron, the Octavia is a pretty handy all-rounder.

Its cabin is classy, comfortable, chock full of technology and littered with clever conveniences and storage solutions. It even has an umbrella in the door that you can use for a rainy game. Most importantly though, it has room for five and the cavernous boot has 640L of space – enough for a couple of full-sized golf bags.

Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo

Now, here’s a car that blurs the boundaries of a traditional sports car as much as it blurs the landscape when you unleash all it can do. It’s the Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo, which is a bit of a mouthful to say (not to mention slightly misleading as it doesn’t have a turbocharged engine) and a mash-up of a station wagon, luxury limousine, eco-warrior and a genuinely mind-blowing sports car.

In Cross Turismo form (which is Porsche-speak for station wagon), it has 405L of cargo space in the boot with the rear seats in place (or up to 1171L with them folded flat) and an extra 84L in the front trunk - or frunk – that is ideal for smaller bags, golf shoes and other accessories.

It also has an additional 20mm of ride height from the air suspension compared to the sedan, as well as bespoke wheel arch fenders and a specific ‘gravel’ mode, that Porsche claims gives the Cross Turismo an extra sense of adventure.

Genesis GV80

What’s Genesis, you might ask? Well, it’s a major player in supporting some of the world’s most prestigious golf tournaments, including the next three instalments of the bi-annual Presidents Cup. Oh, and it’s Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand like Lexus is to Toyota.

It might be a new name, but Genesis has quickly established itself as a genuine alternative to the traditional marques receiving critical acclaim for its latest range of executive sedans and SUVs, with the GV80 recently picking up the coveted J.D Power Engineering Award as its highest-rated all-new vehicle for 2022.

The flagship softroader in Genesis’ growing line-up is a stylish large SUV that is available with either five- or seven-seat configurations and the choice of three engine options across four model grades.

All GV80 models come with a long list of standard equipment, luxurious features and the latest in advanced semi-autonomous safety systems. Top-spec six-cylinder versions even come with high-tech adaptive suspension that uses a camera to scan the road ahead and then pre-emptively adjusts the dampers to iron out the bumps. Clever. And comfy.
