Five new Volkswagen EVs here by 2025

But VW ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs delayed until 2024, joining ID.3 hatch, while ID. Buzz twins due in 2025

Volkswagen’s long-awaited Australian electric vehicle rollout will finally begin next year, with the German brand confirming today that the Volkswagen ID.3 hatch and ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs will arrive in showrooms in 2024.

They will be followed by the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo in 2025.

Battery-electric models have been a long time coming for Volkswagen, which has been outspoken in its advocacy for the technology and how government should be doing more to promote their sale in Australia.

The company told carsales last year that it was close to finalising the Australian launch program, which should see it introduce the ID.4 and ID.5 in 2023, with the ID.3 following in 2024.

All three EVs are now coming next year, with local pricing, specs, launch dates and production allocations still to be announced.

That said, VW Australia has confirmed it’s aiming for a sub-$60,000 starting figure for the recently facelifted Volkswagen ID.3 in order to “maximise national and state-based electric vehicle incentives”.

VW has also previously suggested the Tiguan-sized Volkswagen ID.4 would also start from less than $60,000, aligning it with equivalent combustion-powered models once incentives and rebates are factored in.

Higher-performance GTX versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 may come as part of the range later on, but are yet to be confirmed for Australia.

Volkswagen’s local passenger vehicles director Michal Szaniecki said this week that the EVs that do land Down Under will be available from every VW dealer nationally.

“Just as Australians have long expected that a Golf or Tiguan will lead their segment for premium feel and the most enjoyable driving characteristics, we’re ensuring the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 launch with these same attributes top of mind,” he said.

“We can confirm the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 will both start production and go on sale next year, so our message for customers thinking about switching to a BEV is this – we’re here in 2024, and here in a big way.”

Production of the Aussie-bound ID. Buzz people-mover and the Cargo commercial van will start “at the end of 2024”, pointing to a launch in the second quarter of 2025.

Volkswagen Australia’s commercial vehicles director Ryan Davies said the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo would resonate with local VW fans on account of their unique blend of competence and style.

“Volkswagen has an incredible heritage with Australians from their love of the iconic Kombi decades ago to their world-beating enthusiasm for Amaroks in the present day,” Davies said.

The ID. Buzz is a people-mover that stops traffic, people stop, stare and smile.

“We expect the ID. Buzz Cargo to sell at least as well, and it’s incredibly appealing for sole traders who want to reduce their emissions in the most fun way possible.

“This is a proper, from the ground up tradies’ BEV – not a tacked-on reverse engineering of an existing diesel vehicle.”
