Five songs to have a good cry in the car to

Not every road trip is a journey of joyous self-discovery – sometimes you’re wallowing in self-pity and sadness. Cue ugly crying in the car.

The great news is that our cars can act as an interruption-free safe haven - a mobile bubble of erupting emotion. A slow and cautious drive to a bleak destination to belt out some above-average tears can be cathartic.

This got us thinking about our cars, and sad songs, and the emotional unravelling that leads to bawling in your car. Alone. Cars are not just transportation, they are a safe and warm place where you can just let the tears out, have a bit of a scream and recompose yourself before heading back out into the real world, judgement-free. Aren't cars just the best?

Here are some songs guaranteed to strike a chord from rocking Rod Stewart to the formidable range of Mariah Carey - something for everyone. Make sure to have some tissues handy.

Olivia Rodrigo - Driver’s License

Olivia Rodrigo’s Driver’s License is for anyone who has ever loved and lost and cried in their cars, possibly while stalking their ex. The disbelief is as real as your red, runny nose.

'Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street

Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus - Nothing Breaks Like a Heart

Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus’ Nothing Breaks Like a Heart cuts straight to the point. The pain is real. And so is breaking the law – don’t do it.

Things fall apart, but nothing breaks like a heart

Toni Braxton - Un-break My Heart

Toni Braxton’s Un-break My Heart will un-hinge un-stoppable tears in a un-precedented un-doing of emotion. Un-beleivable.

Un-break my heart
Say you'll love me again

Mariah Carey - We Belong Together

Mariah Carey’s We Belong Together is a tribute to those times we’ve tried to scrabble our way back from a poor decision. Sometimes you can’t go back. Your bad.

Come back baby, please
Cause we belong together

Rod Stewart - Maggie May

Rod Stewart’s Maggie May is a testament to just how blind love can be sometimes. Until it’s not. Don’t go changing.

‘You stole my heart and that's what really hurts
‘Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
