Not now: regional NSW is far more EV friendly, and what better excuse for a country drive than a spot of wine tasting? Plenty of wineries have dedicated EV charging facilities so enjoy the bonus of a battery top-up while enjoying a top drop or lunch. Here are five faves.
Truth be told, it’s almost more difficult to find a winery in the Hunter that doesn’t have EV charging. But we’ve chosen Brokenwood because of its central Pokolbin location and it’s also a very good winery. Plug into one of the two Tesla Type 2 destination chargers after the 170km drive from Sydney, check the various tasting experiences, maybe book in for lunch at The Wood restaurant, or just sip a glass of Hunter Semillon and have a nibble at the Raw Bar.
Although Bowral is a perennial playground for day-trippers, weekenders or even interstate travellers passing on the Hume Highway, Centennial Vineyards is a destination in itself. Regular entertainment events attract top acts, the restaurant is good for lunch, dinner or even high tea and the cool climate Southern Highlands wines are obviously available for tasting. Top up your EV at one of four Tesla Type 2 chargers and make a day of it.
Mudgee is a good 260km west of Sydney so your EV will be ready for replenishment after the drive, as will your passengers. Lowe Wines is an excellent option and not just for the two EV charging stations. The winery overlooks a lake and under shady umbrellas you can book and enjoy a nine-wine tasting or a picnic hamper on the lawns. A long lunch at Zin House restaurant also beckons, followed by a walk around the biodynamic gardens and you can even take away goodies from the Althea by Zin artisan bakery.
Murrumbateman is a nice little town between Canberra and Yass and the spectacular Shaw winery showcases everything that’s good about the regional wines. Family owned and run for the last 30 years, there’s a tasting room for browsing potential purchases, perhaps with a local cheese platter, or book into the winery’s Olleyville restaurant for a truly memorable dining experience. All EVs are catered for at the three charging stations and you’ll have plenty of time to juice those batteries.
Head west over the Blue Mountains to Orange and you’ll find a burgeoning winery region and at Ross Hill a place to stop, sample some top drops and replenish your EV at their Tesla Type 2 and Porsche charging stations. The Robinson family were winery pioneers in the area, are proud of Ross Hill’s carbon-neutral status and these days welcome drop-ins for a tasting or a combined wine/food platter. The Barrel and Larder cooking school is an added attraction to an all-embracing winery experience.
