Flagship 2024 Polestar 5 to offer full self-driving tech

Next-generation long-range LiDAR just one of several new technologies head to EV brand’s most advanced vehicle yet

The upcoming Porsche Taycan-rivalling 2024 Polestar 5 grand tourer will feature a next-generation long-range LiDAR system as a result of a new deal between the Chinese-owned Swedish car-maker and autonomous vehicle hardware supplier Luminar.

Already primed to receive similar tech for its incoming Polestar 3 large SUV, the Volvo sister brand’s announcement should guarantee the 2024 Polestar 5 comes equipped with full Level 3 autonomous driving capability that will allow it to drive in geofenced areas without supervision from the driver, where legal.

As part of the new deal, the Polestar 5 will also come with laser-scanning capability as well as radar and cameras to help the fast four-door coupe navigate safely without driver input.

Originally inspired by the well-received 2020 Precept concept , the new EV will be based on a bespoke bonded aluminium space-frame chassis developed by Polestar's UK-based R&D team.

It's also been revealed the Polestar will feature dual motors that will pump out around 650kW of torque and 900Nm of torque, which should provide for 0-100km/h acceleration in around three seconds.

Featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture, the sleek Polestar 5 sports car could also debut the car-maker’s next-gen battery tech featuring ultra-fast charging at more than 350kW and providing for a range of more than 500km.

Within the cabin the Polestar 5 is set to be made entirely of recycled and plant-sourced material thanks to a partnership with Bcomp, which has already created a flax-based composite alternative to plastic that could be used for the dash and seats as well as some body panels.

The car will be built at a new factory in China, which will also be carbon-neutral.

Unlike the discontinued Polestar 1 flagship coupe, the new Polestar 5 GT will not be made in limited numbers and will be a series-production model made in both left- and right-hand drive for the global market.

It’s thought Polestar could unveil its 5 in 2023 ahead of first deliveries beginning in 2024.

There's no word on when exactly the Polestar 5 will rock up Down Under, but the Polestar 3, 4 and 5 are confirmed for our market.
