Flagship Volvo XC100 EV on the way

Swedish brand to introduce luxurious new battery-powered SUV coupe that's set to be co-developed alongside next XC90

Volvo is reportedly developing an all-new coupe-style SUV flagship that will be based on the next-generation Volvo XC90.

According to

, the new Volvo will be called the 'XC100 Recharge' and will only be available with a pure-electric powertrain when it goes on sale in about three years.

Created to fill the niche occupied by large SUV 'coupes' like the BMW X6 and Audi Q8, the luxurious Volvo XC100 Recharge will likely feature sleeker, more rakish lines than the XC90 and come with a bespoke cabin that seats just four in comfort.

The US mag claims the Volvo XC100 will trade sportiness for a compliant ride and opulent interior design, while featuring the car-maker's latest autonomous driving features.

Developed alongside the third instalment of the XC90, the XC100 will be built on the Volvo's next-gen SPA-II architecture that's claimed to be a heavily updated version of the current car's platform.

Unlike the XC90, there will be no internal combustion engines offered on the XC100, with the flagship Volvo fitted only with twin electric motors – one to power each axle.

Technical details have yet to be finalised, but it's thought the XC100 will lift its entire pure-electric powertrain from an existing Polestar model, lowering the cost of its development substantially.

That suggests the XC100 could be a reclothed version of the upcoming Polestar 3 previewed by the Precept concept last February.

According to Motortrend, the battery-powered Volvo XC100 is set for an unveiling in 2023, a year after the Polestar 3 is introduced.

Pricing for the Volvo XC100 Recharge is rumoured to start around $85,000 ($A130,000).
