Flat-out Lotus given a pasting

Gentlemen, start your printers: Lotus Racing puts out super-compact paper F1 car

Lotus founder Colin Chapman famously summed up the value system driving his enterprise with one of his industry’s more memorable phrases: “Performance through light weight”.

But chances are even he didn’t envisage how lightweight things might get for this year’s midyear break for the F1 circus. Glass-fibre? Carbon-fibre? Thinner carbon-fibre? Nope – try paper.

The Lotus Racing team has come up with a novel use of social media to keep idle hands occupied during this year’s month off. The Lotus F1 Team Facebook page is offering you the chance to “become an honorary Technical Director and create your own E20 [F1 car]”.

Qualifications and equipment? “You’ll just need a bit of patience and six sheets of 150-180 GSM white paper. Just print, cut fold and glue!”

You can grab your kit by going into the Lotus F1 Team Facebook page and clicking on the big red “E20 Papercraft” button.

Bear in mind that 150-180 GSM paper (that stands for grams per square metre) is not your usual office paper, which is only 80 GSM. It’s most of the way to cardboard.

Nevertheless, the result is without doubt the lightest Lotus ever built.
