Ford developing intelligent hazard-spotting headlights

Next-gen lamps spot pedestrians, cyclists and even animals before you do

Ford is developing an intelligent headlight that point out hazards to help reduce the risk of driving after dark.

The new tech, called Camera-Based advanced Lighting Front System, will also shape the headlight's beam to adjust for the road, bending in corners and widening at roundabouts and junctions.

The new system that uses the satnav to make its decision also uses an infra-red camera mounted in the front grille that locates people and animals larger than a dog up to 120 metres away.

When it detects potential hazards the system can ‘paint’ a spot and a stripe on the roads surface to point out the hazard. Inside the highlighted objects are broadcast on a screen inside the car with an indication of how dangerous they could be to the driver.

Ford wouldn’t comment on when the technology is expected, but a safe bet is that it will be available on the all-new next-generation Ford Focus that’s due some time in 2018.
