Ford EcoBoost 1.0 engine of the year
Tiny triple takes out top spot at International Engine of the Year awards – againFord's 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder has been honoured at the 2013 International Engine of the Year awards.
It's the second consecutive occasion the three-cylinder – which is the subject of recent interest from Mercedes-Benz – has won the award.
"With a technology as mature as the internal combustion engine, it’s very rare to achieve a true breakthrough, but that is exactly what the team accomplished with this engine," said Ford vice president for Global Powertrain, Joe Bakaj.
The Ford powerplant (pictured) was also chosen in the category of 'Best Engine Under 1.0-litre' by a judging panel of 87 journalists from 35 different countries.
In other categories, Volkswagen's 1.4-litre TSI four-cylinder with cylinder deactivation from Golf 7 was judged best new engine, Fiat's two-cylinder turbo CNG engine took out the award for best green engine, and Ferrari's 6.3-litre V12 from the F12 was well clear of all comers (including the second-placed 4.5-litre V8 from the Ferrari 458) in the performance engine category.
Awards presented in other categories were:
1.0 to 1.4-litre – Volkswagen 1.4-litre TSI four-cylinder (EA211),
1.4 to 1.8-litre – BMW/PSA 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder,
1.8 to 2.0-litre – BMW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder,
2.0 to 2.5-litre – Audi 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine from the TT RS,
2.5 to 3.0-litre – Porsche 2.7-litre DI flat six from Boxster, Cayman,
3.0 to 4.0-litre – McLaren 3.8-litre V8,
Above 4.0-litre – Ferrari 6.3-litre V12
