Ford Focus Active crossover under $30K

Jacked-up Ford Focus hatch en route to Australia with eight-speed auto and wireless phone charging as standard

The Ford Focus Active hatch will arrive in Australia in 2019 priced from $29,990, adding a third body style to the revamped hatch and wagon Focus models due to launch in December 2018.

Essentially a jacked-up version of the Focus hatch - think Subaru XV to Impreza - the front-drive Focus Active has a 34mm higher ride height than standard models.

The new German-built Ford Focus Active is being spruiked as a crossover vehicle pitched at adventurous buyers and like all Ford passenger vehicles it comes with a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.

The Ford Focus Active hatch is coming to Australia sometime in 2019

It is powered by the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine (134kW/240Nm) and eight-speed automatic transmission as the rest of the new Ford Focus range. The regular gear lever has replaced by a rotary dial too, freeing up more space.

The new Ford Focus Active hatch features an engine-idle stop-start feature as standard and fuel economy is rated at 6.4L/100km.

Slotting in above the entry-level Ford Focus Trend hatch ($25,990), the Ford Focus Active crossover is fitted as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear skid plates, a new-look front bumper with adaptive LED cornering fog lights.

Unique seat trim is part of the Focus Active hatch

LED daytime running lights and extended wheel arches are part of the package, as is a unique 'trail' drive mode for dirt roads, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and wireless phone charging.

The first car to be based on Ford's all-new C2 platform, the new Ford Focus is being spruiked as a technology leader in the small car segment and Active comes with lane keeping aid and lane departure warning as standard, while the AEB system can detect pedestrians and cyclists as well as cars.

Convenience features like keyless entry and push-button engine start are standard equipment along with Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system, comprising an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

The interior is finished with Nordic Blue interior colour accents on the seats, steering wheel, doors and dashboard, while dual-zone climate control and a 180-degree split-view reversing camera are also standard. Boot space is the same as the hatch at 365 litres.

Stay tuned for the launch review of the all-new Ford Focus in mid-December or check out our first drive of the Ford Focus from France right now.
