Fresh Ford Focus ST wagon unleashed

Fast new Ford Focus ST wagon combines 206kW turbo-petrol four with huge 608-litre boot, but it's not heading Down Under

Ford Performance has released full images of the fourth-generation Ford Focus ST wagon that follows on from the Focus ST hot hatch unveiled last February.

The Blue Oval's new fast wagon goes on sale in Europe from the third quarter of 2019, but sadly the latest Ford Focus ST wagon has already been ruled out for Australia, where the new Focus ST hatch eventually rocks up here later in 2020.

Helping differentiate it from the lesser Focus ST Line, the full-fat Ford Focus ST lifts its sportier styling directly from the ST hatch, including its honeycomb grille, wider air-dam and 10-spoke alloy wheels.

At the rear, there's larger tailgate spoiler and two large exhaust outlets that flank a faux diffuser.

Based on the Blue Oval's latest C2 architecture, the Ford Focus ST wagon will offer European buyers the choice of either the 2.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder from the Mustang EcoBoost and old Focus RS, this time producing 206kW and 420Nm, or a more efficient but torquier 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.

Featuring the hatch's advanced twin-scroll turbo tech and an anti-lag system borrowed from the Ford GT supercar, the Focus ST wagon can hit 100km/h in a credible 5.8 seconds.

The 140kW/400Nm Focus ST diesel, meanwhile, takes a tardier 7.7 seconds.

As far as transmissions go, the petrol engine gets either a six-speed manual or the new option of a seven-speed automatic, while the diesel version misses out on the auto and is only offered as a manual.

Boasting a completely retuned sports chassis, compared to the standard wagon, the load-lugging Focus ST sits 10mm lower and gets 20 per cent firmer dampers at the front and 13 per cent more reactive at the rear.

A quicker steering rack, bigger brakes, sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and an electronic limited-slip differential complete the updates over the standard car.

Inside, sportier Recaro front seats and an aluminium gear knob, scuff plates and pedals set the mood for a more involving driving experience.

In Europe, the Focus ST wagon commands a price premium of only $2000 over the hatch.

Pricing for the 2020 Ford Focus ST hatchback destined for Australia is set to be announced closer to its launch next year.
