Ford Maverick hybrid confirmed
More leaked photos emerge as hybrid powertrain confirmed for Ford’s all-new compact uteAs predicted, the all-new Ford Maverick will get a frugal petrol-electric hybrid powertrain as fresh photos of the production model have been leaked – again – ahead of the baby ute’s official unveiling next week.
New photos of the compact pick-up were posted by the Maverick Truck Club forum, revealing the ute’s front, rear and side profile, along with the interior of a top-spec model.
The Maverick’s cabin features tan leather seats and a wide touch-screen infotainment display.
FX4 stickers can also be seen on the orange ute’s flanks, suggesting it will have a certain level of off-road capability, and potentially a locking centre diff and hill descent control.
The latest leak follows the first official teaser video of the 2021 Ford Maverick earlier today, in which a ‘BRID’ badge can be seen on the tailgate that confirms the compact truck will get a hybrid powertrain.
Built on the same C2 platform as the Ford Escape mid-size SUV, the Mexican-built Maverick is expected to offer plug-in and mild-hybrid options based around a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine – as seen on Escape.
While the Maverick is not yet locked in for Australia, the hybrid version of the Escape is due here early next year.
Conventional engine types are set to include a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder petrol (182kW/373Nm) and possibly an up-spec 2.3-litre turbo-petrol (236kW/448Nm). Expect a dual-clutch automatic transmission like the Bronco Sport to feature as well.
To be officially unveiled on June 8, the Maverick has a Bronco-inspired design with butch and blocky proportions, making it appear like a larger vehicle.
However, it is smaller than the current Ford Ranger dual-cab ute (which measures almost 5.4 metres long) and forgoes meaningful towing and load-lugging capabilities for car-like ride and handling qualities.
The Maverick will likely be offered with front- and all-wheel drive layouts and Ford expects to sell more than 100,000 units of the ute annually.
