Ford Mustang arrives in Oz

First Mustang cars arrive at Melbourne docks as pre-orders explode

As the only Pony-car to be offered in Australia, the Ford Mustang's popularity is snowballing to outrageous levels, with Ford Australia claiming to have paid-up deposits on more than 80 per cent of the 4000 pre-orders for the car.

Whichever way you look at it, that's a lot of cars.

These pre-orders now account the entire first year's allocation of vehicles in Australia.

In other words, if you went into a dealership today and asked for a Mustang, you may have to wait for 12 months – if not more.

"We are simply overwhelmed and humbled by the reception to Mustang thus far, which is probably our closest equivalent to the Beatles’ first trip to Australia," said Ford Australia President and CEO, Graeme Whickman.

Threatening to overtake US presidential hopeful and hotel magnate Donald Trump as the world's most talked-about entity, the Mustang will be offered in Australia with a turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine or a beefy V8.

Mustang prices start at $44,990 for the two-door, rear-drive sports car which can be ordered with manual or automatic transmissions. Step up the V8 and you'll need $54,990, and a bit more if you want the auto gearbox.

Understandably the V8-powered Mustang GT is the most popular with early adopters in Australia, accounting for 86 per cent of orders.

The entry-level 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which will also be used in the upcoming Ford Focus RS, pumps out 233kW and 423Nm of torque. The Mustang GT's 5.0-litre get more sizzle, with 303kW and 525Nm – more than enough to get those rear wheels dancing.

With the recent confirmation that Ford Australia will also offer a supercharged 500kW upgrade for V8 Mustangs from dealerships, the company even has former FPV buyers covered with the new 'Stang.

In terms of body styles the story is similar, with 88 per cent opting for the Fastback leaving just one in 10 customers ordering the convertible.

The blue oval brand reckons its dealers have been 'inundated with enquiries and demand' for the new Mustang, whose popularity is likely to continue by virtue of being sold in
most major global markets.
