Ford Mustang buyers prefer black… and red

50 shades of black? Ford Mustang buyers across the globe prefer Absolute Black

As Ford Australia prepares to launch the Mustang Down Under very late in 2015, it seems buyers across the globe have already stamped their preference on colour choice.

Ford says that early data shows an almost universal desire for just two of the nine paint colours available, with buyers favouring Absolute Black and Race Red almost exclusively.

In Europe – and only a month after the order books opened – just over 1.1 million Mustangs have been configured online, with Race Red and Absolute Black showing as the most popular colours, at around 20 per cent each.

Chinese buyers are likewise keen on red, favouring the hue to the tune of a whopping 35 per cent. In other words, one in three Mustangs in China are likely to be red. But red goes faster, right?

In the Mustang's home market of the US – where sales were up 32 per cent last month – Race Red comes a close second to Absolute Black, while pre-orders in Australia show a similar preference with 23 per cent of buyers opting for red and 15 per cent for black.

Ford Australia says it has had around 20,000 expressions of interest and nearly 1200 pre-orders for the new Mustang. While red and black are by far the most popular colour choices here, there has been strong interest in Oxford White (10 per cent) and Ruby Red (nine per cent) too.

The new Mustang Fastback and Convertible arrives in local dealerships later this year priced from $44,990 for the 2.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder EcoBoost variant.

The V8 'GT' Mustang adds $10,000.
