Ford Mustang Mach-E named
Blue Oval’s first dedicated EV will be called a Mustang; reveal just three days awayFord’s first all-electric model – a mid-size SUV – will not only wear Mustang-inspired design elements; it will also don the iconic pony-car badge.
Ford Mustang Mach-E is the name confirmed overnight by Ford for its all-new battery-powered crossover, which will be revealed in Los Angeles this Sunday evening.
Hosted by actor Idris Elba, the event will be livestreamed on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter from 1:00pm AEDST on Monday (November 18).
Directly afterwards, the Ford Mustang Mach-E – including a limited First Edition version to be detailed on the day – will be available for online pre-order by European and North American customers at Ford.com.
Customers in Europe and the US wishing to reserve a vehicle will be able to create a Ford account, select their specification and preferred Ford dealer, enter their credit/debit card details and place a refundable $US500 ($A730) deposit before finalising their configuration next year when the ordering window opens.
Ford said the Mustang Mach-E will also become available to Chinese customers, but the ground-breaking Tesla rival is yet to be confirmed for any other markets, including Australia.
We asked Ford Australia again today about the prospects of the Ford Mustang Mach-E becoming available here, and spokesman Damion Smy said: “No official prospects unfortunately”.
Ford Australia does not yet offer any kind of electrified model. Its first plug-in vehicle will be a hybrid version of the next-generation Ford Escape due on sale here next year.
The official confirmation of the Mustang Mach-E name follows recent spy shots and these fresh renderings of the five-door EV crossover by online enthusiast forum Macheforum.com.
As you can see, the zero-emissions SUV will share little in common with the Mustang coupe or convertible, apart from similar headlights and tail-lights, plus a prancing horse badge on its closed grille – which may or may not be illuminated as in this render and an official Ford teaser image.
We also know the Mustang Mach-E, which could cost the equivalent of about $A60,000 in the US, Europe and China, will have flush-fitting door-handles and Ford has said it will offer a WLTP driving range of up to 595km.
