Ford Mustang Mach-E to end range anxiety

Intelligent Range calculator claimed to be most accurate way of judging how far you can travel between top-ups

Ford has previewed new technology set to be introduced in its upcoming Ford Mustang Mach-E that could make range anxiety a thing of the past.

Dubbed 'Intelligent Range', the new feature available on the 2021 Mustang Mach-E is claimed to accurately predict how much range you'll be able to eke out of the battery.

Going beyond existing range calculators, Ford says Intelligent Range considers past driving behaviour, weather conditions, real-time traffic conditions and the terrain and elevation of the route chosen by the driver.

Finally, car-to-car communication from other Mustang Mach-E drivers who have driven the same roads will feedback yet more data to provide the most accurate prediction of how far you can travel.

What's more, while driving on the route the system carries on recalculating, so if it's hotter or colder than predicted the system will tweaks its prediction and update the driver.

Making the new tech possible is the Mustang Mach-E's constant connection with the internet, enabling the calculation to be done on the Cloud.

Even with Intelligent Range on board, Ford admits there will be occasions when Mustang Mach-E drivers will still run out of charge. If faced with a flat battery, Mach-E drivers in the US will be towed by Ford Roadside Assistance up to 56km to either their destination or a charger free of charge.

“Electric vehicle customers need to be able to trust their range estimates,” said Ford exec Darren Palmer. “People want to be confident they’re going to make it where they need to go, whether they’re on a road trip or coming home from work.

"Our new Intelligent Range feature helps ensure Mustang Mach-E owners around the globe know where they stand ahead of time, freeing them up to enjoy the ride.”

Previewed just days after the Blue Oval announced that its pure-electric SUV would come with a hands-off semi-autonomous cruise control system, the Mach E's clever new range calculator has been developed to help ensure the Ford EV has what it takes to go head-to-head with its tech-obsessed Tesla rivals.
