Ford Mustang reveal revs up

Detroit motor show premiere draws close as Ford releases fresh images and V8 rumble audio

The message is clear in Ford’s latest Twitter video previewing the seventh-generation 2022 Ford Mustang ahead of its imminent reveal – start your engines!

The S650 Ford Mustang will be unveiled at the Detroit motor show on Wednesday, September 14 at 8:00pm (10:00am Thursday AEST), and carsales will be on the ground in Motown to bring you all the news.

Ahead of the reveal, the Blue Oval brand has shown off the pony car’s new red starter button, which has semi-retro surfacing surrounded by modern carbon-look materials.

One of the few criticisms of the current sixth-generation Ford Mustang has been the low-quality materials used in the cabin, along with a lack of attention to detail, so these have hopefully been addressed with the new model.

The latest preview of the hotly-anticipated muscle car is backed by the same audio track heard in previous teasers, the Mustang’s V8 engine revving, crackling on the overrun and then screeching its tyres during what we can only presume is a hard launch.

We’ll soon know how much power and torque the new Ford Mustang slams its rear wheels with, the 5.0-litre Coyote V8 widely expected to return to active duty – albeit with a few tweaks to bump up performance and 0-100km/h acceleration times.

It’s expected that at least three core variants of the new Mustang coupe will be on offer, starting with a four-cylinder turbo version and two V8 models, the GT and GT Performance.

Ford Australia has not yet disclosed when the new S650 Mustang will begin rolling into Aussie dealerships, but with manufacturing expected to start from around March 2023, we could see a launch here late next year.

Sales of the current S550 Ford Mustang in Australia were halted in July 2022 as demand outpaced supply.

Ford won’t say how many back orders it currently holds, and it remains to be seen whether current orders will carry over to the new model if the supply issues continue.
