Ford Mustang stampede

Following Bullitt’s local success, more limited editions of iconic pony car galloping into Australia

Stand by for a steady diet of Ford Mustang limited editions as the blue oval looks to shore up the sales momentum of the iconic coupe in Australia.

Excited by the impact of the limited edition Mustang Bullitt and with a Supercars racing program about to roar into action, Ford intends launching a series of short-runs of both the Mustang coupe and convertible.

“We have broad plans for Mustang in terms of where we are going to take that product; limited editions we will bring in over time; where we are going to take that product and that’s all built around that Supercar plan,” Ford marketing chef Danni Winter confirmed to carsales.com.au.

Ford is staying tight-lipped about just what LEs have been - or will be - signed off, but Carsales understands the full gamut of modifications from minor cosmetic to significant performance updates have been at least considered.

And while some LEs will come from overseas - as per Bullitt – there is a suggestion some will also be local derivations.

Unfortunately, it appears the red-hot Ford Performance GT350 and GT350R are still off the list for Ford Australia as is the Roush supercharger kit already sold here by the likes of Herrod Performance.

However, there will be a Ford Performance Mustang at the Supercars opener in Adelaide in February.

It will be a real V8 racer wrapped in a unique Ford Performance livery for promotional duties, supplementing the six vehicles that will hit the track in the hands of DJR Team Penske’s defending Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin and team-mate Fabian Coulthard and four from the Tickford Racing stable for Chaz Mostert, Cam Waters, Lee Holdsworth and Will Davison.

“I would expect that the Adelaide 500 in particular is going to be a big event for us because that is going to be our launch event for the year,” Winter said.

“We will have a range of activities over the course of the year that will be strategically aligned with our plans for Mustang as well.”

Ford’s ongoing Supercars promotional plans are expected to include a strong interaction with Mustang road-car owners, some use of Ford Supercar drivers and promotion of Ford Performance models including the forthcoming Fiesta ST and Ranger Raptor, which is already the Supercars championship’s official recovery vehicle.

One promotional plan that’s already rolled out is a deal to provide Mustangs to the new Tailem Bend circuit for customer track days.

“We have some new Ford Performance vehicles coming, so we see that [Supercars sponsorship] as a good opportunity to communicate the broader range within the Ford Performance brand and it will be a key investment for us in terms of Mustang,” Winter said.

Mustang launched in Australia in early 2016, selling 6208 examples that year, 9165 in 2017 and 6412 in 2018. It was the subject of a substantial update in 2018 and boosted by the Bullitt late in the year. Seven hundred examples of the manual-only coupe were quickly snapped up.
