When the venerable Ford Falcon ute was retired in mid-2016, Blue Oval fans were crestfallen as the demise of an Aussie icon sank in.
But now there’s reason to rejoice, with a new V8-powered rear-drive Ford ute hitting the digisphere in the form of this Mustang pick-up truck render.
The unofficial Mustang ute com-gen is highly unlikely to preview anything rolling out of Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly plant in Detroit, Michigan, but that doesn’t make this flight of fantasy any less intriguing.

Indeed, a two-door Ford Mustang ute parked up on the building site would generate plenty of chit-chat during smoko.
This creation by X-Tomi Design is joined by several other Mustang variants, including a wagon or shooting brake and even an entry-level convertible with steel wheels and plastic bumpers.

But back to the hero render and the Mustang ute’s front-end is pretty much identical to the new 2023 Ford Mustang coupe – which made its global debut at the 2022 Detroit motor show last week and pretty much stole the show.

Of course the rear-end is vastly different, featuring a tray back that will be very familiar to owners of the 290kW Ford Falcon XR8 ute with a soft tonneau cover that exposes the sort of hay-hauling practicality that Aussies love.
While the fictional pick-up truck is based on the four-cylinder Ecoboost Mustang, we’d like to assume Ford would hypothetically offer the same 373kW 5.0-litre V8 shoe-horned into the Mustang Dark Horse high-performance coupe.

If you’re a fan of shooting brakes or sleek high-performance wagons then X-Tomi Design has also got you covered with a muscular-looking design that wouldn’t be out of place blatting around a racetrack.

The Mustang wagon’s flared rear haunches contrast nicely with its long bonnet and this muscled-up family hauler would be the ideal car for those who like to go against the grain.
