Ford patents car wheel unicycle

Blue Oval wins weirdest patent of the year with unicycle that borrows your car’s rear wheel

Ford has applied for what must be the strangest automotive invention of 2015 -- a unicycle that pinches one of your car’s rear wheels.

The radical idea, revealed by blog Patent Yogi, is thought to have been created for cities that have banned cars. Once you’ve parked your car on the outskirts of a city, you remove the bike from the boot and the car is lifted using a hydraulic ram to allow you to remove a rear wheel to fit the bike to it.

From the sketch, it appears the rear wheel contains both the brake and electric motor within its hub and, according to the patent can "selectively disengaged with the vehicle for independent use”, meaning you won’t have to get busy with a wrench.

The added advantage of the new mobility concept is your three-wheeled car will prove near impossible to steal while you ride into town on your unicycle.
