Ford has reportedly patented a new remote-control revving function in the US, which will allow owners to rev their engines even without anyone in the car.
Revealed on a dedicated online Ford Mustang forum, the new feature is said to function either directly from the vehicle key fob or via a smartphone app.

According to the forum the patented device is designed “entirely to allow people to show off the sound of the car without having to be inside it” and will allow owners to start the engine and blip the throttle for a certain amount of time before returning to idle.
As detailed by Ford’s official patent document – initially filed back in 2020 – owners will also be able to select a ‘target revving sequence’ or pattern.
“For example, pressing a first button once may cause the engine to be revved (or an engine revving sound to be played) once at a pre-set peak speed, pressing the first button three times may rev the engine three times, etc,” said the patent.

Ford is yet to confirm which internal combustion- or hybrid-powered models its new remote-rev function will be available for, however, the patent says the technology is also applicable to electric vehicles (EVs), which will be able to play recorded audio sounds including a turbine or “flux capacitor” sound.
That said, Ford included an image of a Mustang within its patent filing, giving a pretty good indication of the feature’s target market.
