Ford patents revolutionary in-car cinema
US car-maker files drawings outlining a drive-in movie theatre for its autonomous carsFord has been caught patenting new technology that could transform your sedan or SUV of the future into a home cinema, in your car.
The new tech, filed to the US Patent Office and leaked online, features a roll-down screen that deploys from the top of the windscreen and displays images projected from a ceiling-mounted projector.
The patent application also includes incorporating the screen in a large dashboard-mounted screen, instrument panel and even a small display embedded into the rear-view mirror.
The new tech, which could harness video-streaming from online entertainment suppliers like Netflix or Amazon, would only be operational when the vehicle is stationary or in full autonomous mode.
Speaking to US magazine Car and Driver following the leak of the patent drawings, the US car-maker said: “As a technology leader, we submit patents on innovative ideas as a normal course of business. Patent applications are intended to protect new ideas but aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans.”
