Ford reveals 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine

A4 paper-sized three-cylinder aluminium engine delivers Ford's highest power density yet, and will soon appear in Focus

Following news earlier this year of the smallest engine in the company’s history, Ford has this week announced its 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder in the UK.

Developed by UK engineers and manufactured in Cologne, the high-tech, ultra-efficient aluminium mill will feature in Focus models from next year. Ford says the new engine will give them an edge on the competition, making Focus a class leader in terms of both CO2 emission and fuel economy.

Direct injected and turbocharged, the block of the dimensions of the low capacity engine mean it can fit onto an A4 sheet of paper. It develops 92kW/170Nm (with 200Nm in overboost mode) while consuming an average of 4.2L/100km and emitting just 109g/km of CO2.

A 74kW version is also planned which Ford says will enable Focus to deliver emissions performance of 109g/km. It will eventually find its way under the bonnet of C-MAX, Grand C-MAX and the new Ford B-MAX from mid-2012.

"The new 1.0-litre EcoBoost, and our entire family of EcoBoost engines, represent technology breakthroughs that deliver power, fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions through turbocharging and direct injection,” said Ford president and CEO, Alan Mulally. “These engines are delivering the fuel-efficient vehicles customers want."

In the coming years, Ford says it will manufacture up to 1.3 million examples of the 1.0-litre engine per annum.
