Ford reveals plug-in Transit Custom
Concept for a plug-in delivery van to be tested in British capital for 12 months, has 50km pure-electric rangeFord has unveiled one of a fleet of 20 plug-in hybrid Transit Custom vans it plans to test on the roads in London.
The announcement that prototype plug-in hybrid vans had begun testing follows last month's announcement that the US car-maker would launch 13 hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles, including a Transit PHEV, within five years.
The reason for the real-world testing is to not only test the new plug-in powertrains - that's claimed to provide the van a reliable 50km pure-electric range, but also to trial new software and telematics created to reduce emissions.
Over the 12-month pilot Ford says, for the most part, the delivery vans will run on electric power alone, only relying on its combustion engine outside the city centre for longer journeys.
Once the test is completed, Ford says it plans to offer the plug-in hybrid van for sale but not until 2019, at the earliest.
