A team of British engineers have embarked on a new project to reinvent the legendary Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 as an ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre-bodied supercar.
Developed under the ‘Vision 148’ codename, the project will see Sierra Cosworth RS500 number 148 (of 500) reborn with an outlandish carbon-fibre body and a bespoke but historically-inspired powertrain prepared by none other than Cosworth itself.
Renderings of the elite one-off have already seen it nicknamed the Carbon Piranha ahead of its manufacturing by the Digital Manufacturing Centre – a key player in the lightweight material industry with key ties to the aerospace, motorsport and exotic car scenes.
According to its creators, the RS500 Carbon Pirahna will weigh less than 1000kg in its finished form, some 210kg less than the original.
Details of the powertrain are non-existent for now, but the expectation is for the Cosworth to overhaul and modernise the original 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, netting hugely improved power and torque figures compared to the factory 167kW/277Nm.
Helping finance the build is an exclusive subscription program being run by the Autovision Club which will offer members exclusive behind the scene access to both the vehicle and the build at key milestones.
No timeframe has been released for the RS500 Carbon Piranha’s completion, nor have there been any estimates as to its performance.
