Mount Panorama will be graced by one of the most powerful Ford vehicles ever produced next month, when the formidable Ford SuperVan 4.2 whirs into town as part of the 2024 Bathurst SuperFest.
Set to take to The Mountain in a series of static and high-speed displays over February 16-25, the 2023 Ford E-Transit SuperVan 4.2 was purpose-built to showcase Ford’s battery-electric know-how and demolish performance benchmarks around the world, starting with the legendary Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
The ballistic one-off will be piloted around Australia’s most iconic public-road circuit by French racing driver Romain Dumas, who said he was looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.
“Driving SuperVan 4.2 is always a huge privilege,” he said.
“For any racing driver, Bathurst is a unique and exhilarating challenge and I can’t wait to give the Australian fans a show they will hopefully never forget.”
It isn’t yet clear whether Ford is targeting some sort of lap record with the SuperVan or if it will be at Bathurst only for publicity and entertainment purposes, but there’s little doubt plenty of people will be keeping an eye on the stopwatch and taking note of how quickly it gets around Mount Panorama.
The famous Bathurst circuit has a reputation as one of the world’s most difficult and technical street circuits to navigate quickly, so much so that Ford Performance global director Mark Rushbrook deems it the ultimate challenge in Australian motorsport.
“SuperVan 4.2 will take on the challenge of Mount Panorama in the same configuration it raced in at Pikes Peak – as the ultimate expression of what is possible with electric performance and Ford’s EV technology,” he said.
“Mount Panorama stands tall as the ultimate motorsport challenge in Australia, and we are excited to see SuperVan 4.2 attack its legendary twists and turns.”
Bookending the Bathurst SuperFest will be the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour international endurance race on February 18 and the following weekend’s Thrifty Bathurst 500 – the new Repco Supercars Championship season opener and a pre-cursor to the full-length 2024 Repco Bathurst 1000 in October.
