Ford to save the V8 with new hybrids

, suggest the US car-maker is creating a hybrid that will pair a powerful longitudinally-mounted V8 with twin electric motors that drive the front axle.It's thought the patent application, lodged with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, reveal how Ford will protect the V8 from forthcoming stricter emissions regulations that have already killed off most naturally-aspirated bent-eights.
The patent suggests then the next-generation Ford Mustang hybrid will be all-wheel drive.
Previously, Ford announced the new Mustang hybrid would "deliver V8 power and even more low-end torque".
At the time, most commentators suggested the hybrid would mate a small turbocharged V6 or, even, the 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder with electric motors but now, following the unearthing of these patents, Ford may simply offer the Mustang hybrid with an electrified V8.
