US Christian conservative group, the American Family Association (AFA), wants a nationwide boycott of Ford for what it deems as "obscene" homosexual-themed advertising shown in Europe last year and the automaker's support of gay marriage.
The group claims three million supporters and runs a reactionary website at boycottford.com
Last month the AFA asked visitors to the website not to buy vehicles from Ford or its other brands in response to the company's $10,000 donation to a gay pride event in Ferndale.
According to the Detroit News 'Autos Insider', dealers have received letters and e-mail messages from residents concerned about Ford's support of gay and lesbian organizations, some from long-time customers who vowed not to buy another Ford until the company changes it policy.
"This is a social issue that Ford really has no business entering into," said AFA spokesman Randy Sharp. "We're telling them: 'Make cars and sell cars.'"
Ford told Autos Insider that the AFA's message is blatantly misleading, and that the company supports a variety of charities and community events but doesn't have a political agenda. Despite this more than 70 per cent of readers responded in favour of the Christian conservatives in Autos Insider's website cyber poll.
