Ford unleashed the steroidal MY2010 Shelby GT500 Mustang at the Detroit motor show earlier this year (more here), but now comes an even more extreme version -- the Shelby Super Snake.
Unveiled at the 35th Annual Ford and Team Shelby Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the newcomer belts out a mammoth 540kW in range-topping form -- representing a massive increase on the donor GT500's quota of 403kW.
The Super Snake gets its added oomph via a Kenne Bell Supercharger, a beefed-up intercooler and radiator, a cold air intake and a high-flow Borla exhaust system.
Complementing its extra straight-line mumbo is a Shelby/Eibach suspension package that comprises adjustable dampers, stiffer springs and thicker anti-roll bars. Keeping the car in contact with terra firma is a set of Pirelli P-Zero gumballs wrapped around 20-inch American Racing Razor rims.
Stopping power comes from a Shelby/Baer six-piston caliper front and rear braking package, and further boosting the car's performance credentials are a short-throw shifter and a 3.73:1 differential.
There's also a host of other accoutrements to further distinguish the king of 'Stangs (of which just 500 examples will be built) from lesser stallions.
These include a Shelby CSM numbered plaque in the centre of the dash and in the engine compartment, 40th Anniversary CSM numbered door sill plates, Shelby floor mats, an ‘Aesthetic engine kit' with billet oil stick and fluid caps and Shelby gauge pod (Shelby signature boost, fuel and oil pressure gauges).
It also cops a bespoke Shelby bonnet with pins, aluminium grille inserts and carbonfibre front fascia splitter, mirror covers and rocker panels.
Leaving onlookers in no doubt about the car's identity are a "Shelby" lettering kit on the decklid, Super Snake and 40th Anniversary badging", sequential tail lights, satin silver striping, front and rear brake duct kits and a 40th Anniversary faux fuel cap cover.
As for the 'Super Snake' moniker, it was first applied to legendary pony car tweaker Carroll Shelby's original 1967 GT500, and it was revived after a lengthy hiatus on the previous Mustang.
