Four-door Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai is developing a symmetrical version of its Veloster sports car - one with two doors on each side!

A Hyundai executive has revealed that the Korean manufacturer is in the throes of developing a four-door version of the Veloster for global markets.

Eunjoo Shin, Manager for the Overseas Product Planning Team at Hyundai Motor Company told the Carsales Network earlier this week that the company was working on the development of a Veloster embodying a conventional four-door configuration.

It's the first time the company has admitted that they have plans for the Veloster beyond its quirky style of one long door on the driver's side and two shorter doors on the passenger side.

Asked to verify or deny Ms Shin's statement, Hyundai Australia's Senior Manager for PR and Events, Ben Hershman, was unable to offer any further information on the timing of a global launch for the 'mirror-imaged' Veloster.

"We don't have that information to hand," he simply replied.

The Veloster as we know it will be introduced to Australia near the end of this year. Hershman says it's too early to discuss pricing and specification for the new car, let alone an alternative variant yet to be officially announced.

"HMCA is very focused on the '1+2'-door Veloster as an exciting and innovative car for our customers," he said, hinting that the four-door model was yet to appear on Hyundai Australia's radar.

While he was not in a position to discuss local specification for the new car when it arrives, Hershman effectively ruled out a bare-bones model, when he told the Carsales Network that the Veloster would have to match the standard safety equipment of other Hyundai models in the range.

Hershman doesn't see the target buyer for the Veloster necessarily being the same demographic as buyers of the Kia Cerato Koup, describing the prospective buyers for the Hyundai as "aspirational", but they are likely to harbour similar expectations of pricing.

For that reason — and since the Veloster is also based on the Elantra platform —we believe the quirky Hyundai will come highly equipped and priced from around $25,000.

Stay posted for our drive impressions of the Veloster.
