Audi has unveiled details of the 2020 Audi A5 ahead of its official reveal at today’s Frankfurt motor show.
Due to reach Australian shores around May next year, the 2020 A5 Coupe, Sportback and Cabriolet boast new looks, mild-hybrid technology and updated features, renewing the fight to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe and BMW 4 Series.
Subtle styling changes have been incorporated into the mid-life update, such a wider, flatter ‘Singleframe’ grille, and diffusers at both ends to accentuate the A5’s sporty pretensions.
In a likely portent for Australian specification, European A5s wear LED headlights as standard and are offered with Audi’s optional Matrix LED headlights and strobing dynamic turn signals.
The predecessor’s polarising rotary control knob makes way for a sleek new 10.1-inch display screen, which sits atop the dashboard and brings haptic feedback and smartphone-like functionality.
The centre screen is matched by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster – ala Virtual Cockpit display – and an optional head-up display.
Under the bonnet, the new A5 family is set to incorporate mild hybrid technology already in play in the likes of the larger A6.
Expect a 12-volt mild-hybrid system in the 140kW/320Nm 40 TFSI and 185kW/370Nm 45 TFSI, mated to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol.
Higher up in the line-up, Audi will offer a 260kW/500Nm S5 and 331kW/600Nm RS5 versions of the new model, though electrification of those variants remains unclear – ditto Australian details.
The A5 line-up is set to be priced from $75,000 in Australia when the new model lands before the middle of 2020.
