FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: Alfa Romeo reveals 307km/h Giulia QV

Italy's M3 rival boasts 380kW to hit 100km/h from standstill in just 3.9 seconds

Alfa Romeo has proved it has what it takes to do battle with BMW's M3 following the official reveal of its most powerful Giulia Quadrifoglio at the Frankfurt motor show.

Powered by an all-new Ferrari-developed 2.9-litre turbo-petrol V6 the new rear-wheel drive Italian sports sedan produces a muscular 380kW/600Nm.

Weighing in at 1524kg the new Giulia can sprint from rest to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds before going on to (eventually) max out at a jaw-dropping 307km/h.

With a claimed Nurburgring time of just 7:39.0, the Giulia QV is said to be the fastest production sedan to have ever lapped the mighty Nordschleife.

Channelling all the power and torque to the road efficiently is a rear multi-link suspension that features a rear differential with torque vectoring capability.

To help keep things stable at high speeds the fastest Giulia comes with a new active aero front splitter that extends at speed to boost downforce, generating an impressive-sounding 100kg at its maximum speed.

Keeping weight down, and helping maintain an optimal 50:50 weight distribution, the small super fast sports sedan has a carbon-fibre bonnet, prop shaft and roof panel. Carbon-fibre Sparco seats are also an option.

Lightweight aluminium, meanwhile, is used for the doors and front wings and suspension components.

Boosting stopping power is the standard braking system, featuring carbon ceramic discs.

The Giulia's interior, like that of the standard car, is dominated by a large 8.8-inch infotainment that's said to feature gesture recognition.

Despite the power and performance on tap Alfa Romeo claims the Giulia Quadrifoglio also returns best in class CO2 emissions of just 198g/km, thanks to the V6's cylinder deactivation system and class-leading aerodynamics.

On sale sometime late next year it's not clear when the most powerful Giulia will make it here. Pricing in Europe has already been announced with the QV starting from €79,000 ($122,000.) A lightweight, even more extreme model is also rumoured to be in the pipeline.
