Just when we thought BMW was going to quietly lull us with an unrelenting diet of fuel-efficient, plug-in hybrids at Frankfurt, it goes and does this.
There might not be a lot of mechanical upgrades here, but the M6 Coupe Competition Edition takes the big BMW coupe and makes it faster and angrier looking.
While there's no mail yet on its Australian availability, the Competition Edition will be sold in Europe only on M6 Coupes that have also been specified with the faster Competition Package.
That means a 305km/h top speed for the 1850kg four-seat coupe from a twin-turbo V8 producing 441kW and 700Nm.
The M6 Competition Edition retains the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, plus the fervent commitment to rear-wheel drive, and hits 100km/h on 3.9 seconds.
Only made in either metallic white or yellow, the M6 Competition Edition will also get signature 20-inch matt black alloy wheels, plus black chrome for the door handles, kidney grilles and gills, plus carbon-fibre to house the side mirrors. Those wheels are covered in 265/35 ZR20 tyres at the front and 295/30 ZR20s at the rear.
A grunty 1200W, 16-speaker Harmon Kardon surround-sound system inside, plus multifunction M seats and a head-up display can also be included in the kit.
In BMW's fashion, it's not cheap, though. The €17,700 kit is priced on top of the standard Competition Package (itself another €9500 over the standard M6 Coupe), and extra €400 for the wheels and tyres, another €1950 for the seats and either €1290 for the entry Harmon Kardon audio setup or €4950 for the 16-speaker version.
