You'd be forgiven for thinking that Borgward is a place name in the fictitious Harry Potter universe or a voting district for some implacable menace in Star Trek canon, but it is in fact a revived German car brand – and it's promising big things.
The reborn German car-maker has today revealed another teaser of its first new vehicle of the modern era, an SUV, showing the rear quarter. Although it's not much to go on, there's some interesting curves going on, which suggests the design will be striking rather than conservative.
All will be revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show from September 15, although the spy pics of a test mule (pictured) suggest a far more conservative design without the dramatically flared wheel-arches seen in the sketch.
Believed to be a plug-in hybrid SUV, with petrol and diesel engine pairings, the new crossover is being pitched as an affordable premium vehicle.
Borgward's bold plans include building and selling 800,000 vehicles by 2020 and then 1.6 million units by 2025. The company's ambitious strategy has international backing from huge Chinese vehicle maker Foton Motor Company.
Based in Stuttgart, Germany – the home of Mercedes-Benz -- Borgward announced its return after 54 years at this year's Geneva motor show and already claims to have a 1000-strong workforce.
It's not clear where the vehicle will be built, but Borgward reckons the car will be production-ready when it's revealed next week, and not simply a concept car preview.
Stay tuned for more.
