FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: First sketches of Audi's new age A2

Gone is the upright, stocky look of the old A2; only the name is shared with this new concept car due for launch in Frankfurt

Audi has released these conceptual sketches of the new A2, its electric-powered design study to be unveiled in Frankfurt this month.

Measuring 3.8m in length, the A2 will be small but technically advanced, featuring 'Matrix beam' headlights and a photochromic roof that can turn opaque or transparent at the push of a button. According to the manufacturer, the headlight system comprises next-gen LED technology and is packaged with an array of microreflectors to reduce glare on high beam. Laser-based tail lights can detect ambient light and automatically operate a fog light that projects a warning triangle on the road behind the car.

Audi claims the car is a full four-seater, despite its footprint (just 1.69m wide). There's room between the separate rear seats to accommodate a bicycle with the front wheel removed for getting around in the city once the car is parked.

As our man Michael Taylor reported back in May, the A2 will go into production and since it has been an oft-expressed wish by Audi management over some years, we reckon it's a sure bet to come here...
