Honda has released pictures of a prototype hybrid version of its CR-V SUV that's scheduled for unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show on September 12.
Due on sale in Europe next year, Honda's 'Hybrid Prototype' is seen as a response to Europe's backlash against diesel engines in the wake of Volkswagen's Dieselgate emissions scandal.
Featuring Honda's latest Multi Mode Drive (i-MMD) powertrain, the more efficient CR-V comes equipped with an electric motor, a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a separate electric motor/generator.
Helping offset the additional weight of the batteries and electric motors, the CR-V ditches a conventional gearbox for a single-fixed gear.
There are three driving modes: an all-electric function for the city, a hybrid setting tailored for low-speed urban driving, and pure petrol engine power for the highway.
Announcing it will no longer offer a diesel CR-V in European markets, Honda will also use Frankfurt to unveil another new CR-V powered by its downsized 1.5-litre VTEC turbo-petrol engine driving through either a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic.
Pricing will be announced at the show, but there's no news yet on whether we'll see the CR-V hybrid Down Under.
