Kia's determination to have a presence in market segments other than entry-level is evident in the svelte four-door "coupe" penned by ex-Audi stylist and now Kia chief design officer Peter Schreyer.
Thought to be in line for the tag 'Veredus' at its Frankfurt show introduction, the car has officially been dubbed the Kia GT.
The GT title was initially flagged by images of the new car on an Italian carblog that clearly displayed the badge in the licence plate area.
On the eve of the svelte rear-drive, four-door's Frankfurt unveiling, Kia is still not giving away a lot about the mechanicals, concentrating more on the elegant exterior styling and the interior details.
As expected, the GT features 'suicide' rear doors, rear-hinged to allow the easiest possible access and eliminating conventional B-pillars to underline the four-door coupe theme.
Kia started work on the GT in November 2010, presumably riding on the back of Kia owner Hyundai's already established and highly regarded Genesis sedan and two-door coupe models.
Under the guidance of Peter Schreyer and Kia's European design chief Gregory Guillaume, the car follows recent Kia design signatures as seen in 2010's Pop concept and the Kee coupe.
The designers adopted a "copper" theme for the four-seat interior, which has imbued the GT with a distinct warmth that contrasts with the mica-flake, pale grey exterior colour. The single-piece seats have been designed so they appear to "float" on arched supports.
The driver is presented with a glass instrument panel with three layers of LEDs giving a three-dimensional impression, while the centre console has been designed to do away with the "usual proliferation" of controls, buttons and displays.
Conventional side mirrors are replaced by two rear-facing cameras that send images to LED screens on the front doors.
The GT's roof is slightly "bubbled" to increase interior headroom that may have been compromised by the low profile and the bonnet gets a power bulge with an air intake.
The LED headlights, with six "deeply recessed" LED illuminators, are a distinctive feature too
Other details remain pure speculation but it would be difficult to believe the GT would not be powered by the Hyundai/Kia 5.0-litre Tau V8.
