Mercedes-AMG has shown off its 2016 C 63 DTM racer based on the new, recently revealed, C63 Coupe.
Sporting a huge aero package, the new DTM racer is lower and wider with a big increase in front and rear track. Most noticeable is the huge wheel-arch treatment and swooping side skirts that narrows the gap between the German touring car racer and some of the trick aero used in Formula 1.
To comply with the 2016 DTM spec, the racer will use the same 375kW 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 -- but the new race engine will be short-lived before the race regulations change in 2017 and 440kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines become mandatory.
The 2016 new C 63 racer will have a hard act to follow. Previous C-Class-based DTM race cars have won 85 out of 159 races.
As well as the DTM race car, Mercedes-AMG’s road car division has also released pictures of a C 63 AMG Coupe equipped with its new Edition 1 performance kit.
Available on the both the 350kW C 63 (we don’t get) and the 375kW C 63 S, the Edition 1 tweaks doesn’t alter the power output of the standard car’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.
Instead, on the lower powered version it introduces matte-grey stripes and Mercedes-AMG’s full Aerodynamics Package that introduces a new front splitter, side skirts, a rear diffuser and a subtle (beside the DTM racer) lip spoiler.
The visual tweaks continue with the full AMG Night Pack that adds a silver chrome grille, chrome exhaust tops and new matte-black wheels. Inside, there’s sports seats a fake-suede-wrapped steering wheel.
On the more powerful C63 S the stripes are painted yellow -- a colour also added to both 19- and 20-inch alloy wheel options.
In the only nod to lifting performance to match its sportier looks, the 375kW version comes standard with carbon ceramic brake discs and a set of grippier, track day friendly tyres.
