FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: smart shows off new ForTwo Cabrio
Drop-top version of pint-size city-car revealed. We’ll never get itSmart has revealed its cabriolet version of the ForTwo city-car ahead of its official unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show next month.
Like before, the Cabriolet version it replaces comes with an electric retractable fabric roof that takes just 12 seconds to peel back. For the new version it can even be operated at the little convertible’s 155km/h top speed.
The roof can also be operated using the key and, for the full topless experience, you can remove the roof rails by hand and store them in a special compartment in the boot lid.
Available with both the 52kW/91Nm 1.0 or the more powerful 66kW/135Nm 0.9-litre turbo the convertible is available with either a five-speed manual or a dual-clutch automatic.
Inside, the ForTwo is almost identical to the coupe with the dash dominated by the firm’s 7.0-inch infotainment system.
Pricing for the ForTwo Cabriolet is expected to attract a premium of at least $3000 over the regular car when it goes on sale early 2016, although we’ll never see it here following Daimler’s decision to pull the plug on the smart brand before the all-new ForTwo was launched in Australia.
Smart could eventually return if it goes ahead with a bigger SUV that’s rumoured to have been green-lit for 2018, but anything smaller for now is unlikely.
