The Ford Mustang may have its origins in a regular family sedan, but the legendary pony car has resolutely remained a compact coupe or convertible.
So what inspired the creators of this bizarre conversion on a 1965 Mustang coupe to picture it as a potential eight-seat limo?
Certainly the Mustang’s tendency towards compact – and even slightly chunky – lines doesn’t really encourage tampering of this kind. Even though the Mustang limo on sale through carsales steers clear of some other incredibly outrageous stretches, it remains either an automotive travesty or an inspiration to Mustang fans, depending on how you look at it.
It was built by well-known Sydney car-modifier Sam Mikha more than 20 years ago, to be used as a highly-visible form of transport covering various functions, from weddings to winery tours.
Employing the original 289 cubic inch Ford V8 driving through a three-speed auto gearbox, the deep black Mustang looks a treat with its alloy wheels, white-wall tyres, contrasting bright red vinyl trim and all the chrome and glitter that is representative of its era.
It’s accessed via four doors: two to enter the driver’s compartment and two aft of the B-pillar. To enable gracious and dignified entry, all four are considerably larger than the originals.
There’s seating for eight: Driver and front-seat passenger on individual buckets at the forward end and six at the rear on facing full-width bench seats,
Fully approved as an eight-seat hire vehicle, the air-conditioned stretch Mustang has the prerequisite audio entertainment and plenty of room in the back seat for revellers.
It has been well kept too. The owner says it in excellent mechanical condition and is always reliable.
“If you’ve got a hankering to cater for school formals, weddings, hens or bucks parties, airport and corporate events, winery tours, birthday parties, nights out, concerts and all sorts of promotional events, and you want to do it differently, this reimagining of a 1965 Ford Mustang coupe could just do it for you.”
The stretched Mustang is for private sale at $99,000 and currently resides in Beresfield NSW, about half an hour west of Newcastle.
The Mustang with a difference is registered until June 2021. It can be viewed by appointment and will be sold with a roadworthy certificate.
It’s maybe not as lithe as the original, but it’s certainly happy to saddle up for more than the usual number of riders.
