The BMW 2002 is one of the most iconic models ever produced by the Bavarian brand, especially the Turbo versions that pioneered early turbocharging technology.
But sculking around in the Turbo’s shadow was a naturally-aspirated performance terror packing up to 124kW – 1kW more than the factory hero – and offering better fuel economy with similar outright performance, just as capable handling but better ride comfort and a more responsive engine.
That car was the Alpina 2002, known by some as BMW 2002 Alpina.
These vehicles weren’t produced anywhere near as abundantly as their 2002 donors or the iconic 2002 Turbo, making them incredibly rare today, especially in Australia.
The emergence of a pristine 1975 race replica on carsales then is worth a look, especially when it’s wearing the classic red and white Marlboro motorsport livery.
Restored lovingly as a COVID lockdown project, it’s not hard to see why this vehicle is being advertise for $145,000 – it is immaculate in every way and sounds even better in the walk-around hype video.
“This car is unique in Australia as a one of a kind, in iconic Marlboro racing livery authentic to the period when these cars competed in motorsport,” the description reads.
“This is not a racing car, but presents, drives and sounds like one. Typically, Alpina did not sell their cars, rather parted them out for future racing builds, so few exist in their original performance configuration.
“This amazing tribute vehicle was my COVID project commencing with a barn find, as an extremely rare rust-free original bodied car that had been in dry storage for several decades.
“This is a car that will not only make your collection pop, but also present a road registered daily driver to enjoy regularly.
“I am reluctant to sell this car as it’s a lot of fun and there is not another one in Australia like it.”
The heritage decals are partnered with a spotless black leather interior – contrast against by red trim and stitching – and even has the original Alpina dash plaque still in place.
The hottest Alpina 2002 was known as the A4S which was good for more than 210km/h thanks to forged pistons, Kugelfischer fuel injection, a new cylinder head with larger inlet and exhaust valves, sports camshaft, retouched crank gear, custom exhaust system and air cleaner and an optional five-speed manual, close-ratio transmission.
All these mechanical upgrades were paired with an overhauled chassis comprising lower and stiffer spring, Bilstein front dampers, adjustable Konis rear dampers, reinforced semi-trailing arms and front spindles, thicker anti-roll bars, quicker steering ratio, wider tyres and ventilated brakes.
