Lamborghini has long been the poster brand – literally – of the supercar world.
Italy’s Raging Bull brand has been credited with creating the now-crowded auto category back in the 1960s with the stunning Miura, but it followed that up in 1974 with the Lamborghini Countach, which blew everything out of the water both in terms of styling and performance.
Any Lambo aficionado will know the brand is famous for its prolonged model lifecycles and the Countach easily had the longest, being produced in one form or another from 1974 to 1990 (before being reprised with the modern Countach limited-edition in 2021).
While it wasn’t the most famous Countach of them all – that title belongs to the LP5000 QV – arguably the best was the 25th Anniversary Edition produced between 1988-1990, representing the very last of the breed before the Diablo was released.
These versions featured all of the raucous mechanical goodies and performance of the LP5000 QV and offered them in a more refined, dignified and elegant fashion with marginally better visibility and oodles of kit.
Fun fact: Horacio Pagani was responsible for the redesign.
And now, one of the last examples ever produced has surfaced for sale in New South Wales for a cool $2 million.
The car in question is a pristine 1990 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary that’s covered just 438km since new and is one of just two currently listed on carsales.
This particular example is actually a UK-delivered vehicle that was imported to Australia last year and is believed to be one of just a couple of factory-produced right-hand drive examples in Australia featuring the six Weber carburettors and that (enormous) signature rear wing.
The significance of the carburettors comes down to the Countach’s performance credentials; carburised versions of the 5.2-litre V12 bellowed out 335kW/500Nm whereas the fuel-injected versions intended primarily for the US market only managed 309kW.
High-output versions were capable of reeling off 0-100km/h acceleration in around 4.7 seconds and claimed a top speed of 295km/h.
Having been protected, appreciated and frenzied over by just one fastidious owner since new, this Countach was delivered in 1990 and immediately put into storage, where a log was kept every 30 days for the next 23 years detailing everything from oil pressure to spark plugs and battery levels.
“It has been lovingly checked by Lamborghini in every aspect and is now fully registered in NSW,” the seller says.
“This car is totally original in every way and is a one-off opportunity to buy the very best 25th Anniversary Countach in existence anywhere in the world today.”
Included in the steep but potentially lucrative asking price is the original invoice from Portman Lamborghini, correspondence between the original owner and Portman regarding deposit and payment, original registration document and original UK number plates.
The pristine 32-year-old Countach also comes with its original owner’s manual, service book, spare wheel, tool kit, jack, bulb set and a pair of genuine Lamborghini gloves.
