Australia doesn’t have many homegrown supercars, but Holden aficionados would say the closest the Red Lion ever came to such a thing was the mighty W427.
Conceived as HSV’s 20th birthday present to itself and pitched as the ultimate Commodore, the W427 was released in 2008 as the undisputed flagship of the HSV portfolio, the pinnacle of Australian muscle and a showcase of what the VE Commodore could really be and do.
It debuted as the quickest, fastest and most powerful Aussie performance car to date with the biggest engine ever fitted to a Commodore or Commodore-based product: the mighty 7.0-litre ‘LS7’ V8 pinched out of the C6 Corvette Z06.
Power and torque were rated at 375kW and 640Nm respectively, without the help of a supercharger or ethanol etc – just good old fashion displacement.
A six-speed manual transmission sent power to the rear wheels and helped the W427 launch from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 270km/h.
More than just a big engine, the W427 boasted bespoke high-performance brakes, its own unique rear differential and an enhanced chassis set-up that put the already very talented GTS of the time in the shade.
Just 137 examples of this Australian M5 killer were ever produced, which makes the W427 one of the rarest HSVs of all time and means used prices are often sky high.
It’s rare for more than a couple to come up for sale at the same time, let alone one that’s never been registered and has just 72km showing on the clock like this 2009 example currently listed on carsales for a cool $448,888 plus costs.
This specific vehicle is build number 120 of 137, making it one of later examples to roll off the Clayton assembly line in 2009, adorned in its Herron White paint and two-tone red and black leather interior.
Spotless in every facet of the term, this W427 is one of five examples currently listed on carsales but is undeniably the cleanest and in the best condition, part of a private collection facing the age-old issue of space confines.
“I’m not interested in presenting my pride and joy to just anyone,” the seller said.
“This is a one of a kind brand new, never been registered icon. Be quick before I change my mind.
“I don’t need to sell it and would probably prefer if I didn’t. As strange as this might sound, room is the issue.”
Such is the ‘as-new’ condition, the car is still wearing its factory-spec Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres…
