The Porsche 911 back catalogue is full to the brim of all kinds of limited-edition exotica, historical icons and straight up monsters, but there are a few that stand out more than others.
One of the more recent examples is this 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster – a limited-run, retro-inspired rag-top based on the previous-generation GT3, blurring the profile lines between the rear-engined 911 cabrio and the mid-ship Boxster roadster.
But make no mistake: under its unique silhouette the Speedster was and still is very much a 911 and effectively born into royal status with its GT3 underpinnings, big-bore boxer engine, six-speed manual transmission and bespoke carbon-fibre bodywork.
Only 1948 examples were produced – of which just 28 came to Australia – including vehicle number 975, which is currently listed for sale on carsales for a casual $635,000.
The Speedster nameplate has been around in Porsche lore for decades now, with the 2019 iteration created as a 70th birthday celebration of the fabled sports car brand’s founding in 1948 and the release of the Porsche 356, with the ‘Speedster’ body style and nameplate first appearing in 1954.
Porsche Speedsters of any generation or disposition have long been among the most collectible and desirable models among the brand’s illustrious portfolio, and that applies to the most recent one.
The 911 Speedster is essentially a GT3 Cabriolet in terms of its mechanical make-up, however, the classic side profile and sleeker proportions couldn’t be replicated with standard cabrio hardware.
Instead, it’s fitted with an exclusive fabric roof design stowed beneath an “aesthetically shaped convertible top compartment” made of a single piece of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic.
Designers also altered the car’s belt line and windows to achieve the classic Speedster silhouette, rounded out at the back by a GT3 Touring rear apron and spoiler.
Other unique appointments include an ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre bonnet, bespoke carbon splitter, carbon-composite full-bucket seats, shortened gear lever and a retro-inspired black and green instrument cluster.
As for the powertrain, the Speedster features a 375kW/470Nm version of the GT3’s 4.0-litre flat-six petrol engine, enhanced by optimised fuel-injectors, a modified intake system and a specially-developed lightweight stainless sports exhaust system said to save 10kg compared to the GT3’s.
Zero-100km/h is done and dusted in acclaimed four seconds on the way to a top speed of 310km/h.
The original asking price of the 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster was $604,800 plus on-road costs, yielding the seller of this example a handy pay day when they part ways with this modern classic.
