From the Classifieds: Big, bad and ugly Chevrolet Caprice wagon

A slice of Hollywood history and large doses of street cred ooze from this ‘low and slow’ 1990 Chevy Caprice

Ever seen something so ugly or outlandish it’s immediately cool?

Well, that’s exactly how we’d describe this 1990 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon currently listed on carsales for a tempting $27,000.

This is one of the first examples of the fourth-generation Chevrolet Caprice, which was the last generation to be produced in the US and left Holden holding the mantle in 1999.

But this particular Chevy oozes street cred, with its slammed, elongated body and enough room for up to eight people.

When was the last time you saw a wagon with a side-opening tailgate and a rear dickie seat?

In the listing on carsales, the owner describes it as “one of a kind in Aus, very rare, big bad and deliciously ugly, low and slow, long roof Chev, awesome cruise machine for big family or bunch of blokes on blokes…”

Still in its original left-hand drive configuration, the car is powered by a 5.0-litre (305ci) V8 with 49,555km showing on the odo.

The big-bore powerplant is hooked up to a four-speed automatic transmission for what would have to be one of the laziest driving experiences of any wagon to date – that is, when the original rear springs are refitted in order to obtain a roadworthy certificate…

Inside the cabin you’re greeted by a sea of grey cloth, carpet and plastic offset by some wood trim, with a fully integrated instrument cluster and dashboard only adding to the exterior’s sleekness.

That ultra-low mileage can partly be attributed to the bulk of the car’s life being spent in storage since it was imported to Australia in 2001.

However, its previous history is unknown by both the seller. Import approvals are included.

According to the current owner, the car appeared in a couple of Hollywood blockbusters back in the day, including Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider, and has therefore been used sparingly as a movie prop (hence the low mileage).

With large passenger cars and V8s disappearing quickly from showrooms, this 1990 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon could be seen as a goldilocks or unicorn buy, especially those with an affinity for unique Yank tanks.

It’s located in Ballarat in regional Victoria, with the owner happy to assist with interstate transport.
