A seven-figure asking price is pretty well par for the course when it comes to the 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III these days, and another one has just been listed on carsales with a cool $1.1 million price tag.
The car in question is a Monza Green example fitted with Saddle interior trim and is said to be one just 21 produced with a factory sunroof – and who knows how many are left.
Confirmed and authenticated as being Phase III vehicle 196 of 300 and originally sold by Slater Ford, this particular GTHO has 36,268km on the odometer courtesy of five owners and was subject to a full restoration at the hands of respected Ford GT specialist Frank Portelli.
Despite the plates being blurred in the listing images, the NSW seller has confirmed the car wears Victorian number plates reading ‘HO-196’ as an homage to its unique build number.
The $1.1m asking price isn’t the highest GTHO figure we’ve seen in recent times; a yellow example sold at auction in September last year for a healthy $1.3m (plus auction costs), smashing the previous record set seven months earlier by around $150,000.
For any of our younger readers who might not be aware of the significance of the GTHO Phase III, it was billed as the world’s fastest four-door production car when it launched in late 1970, thanks to its 228km/h top speed and a 5.8-litre Cleveland V8 that officially pumped out 224kW, although many claim the actual figure was closer to 280kW.
Any Phase III is a desirable thing, but this particular July 1971-built example is especially so given its factory sunroof – and the fact it has less than 40,000km under its belt.
