A pristine 1973 Mazda RX-4 with just 6397km under its belt has just been listed at carsales by a Brisbane dealer for $174,950.
And if you think that’s a lot of dosh for a privately imported 50-year-old Mazda, this is one special rotary manual coupe.
Introduced in Japan in late 1972, the Mazda Luce LA2 was marketed as a sporty and luxurious alternative to the smaller RX-2 and RX-3, then exported to markets including North America as the Mazda RX-4.
This particular example is an “extremely low mileage, incredibly original, factory right hand drive” vehicle that has a chassis number prefix of LA22S and was sold new in Japan (so it’s badged as a Luce GS) to its original owner in Takahama city on July 18, 1973.
Powered by Mazda’s 1.1-litre two-cylinder 12A rotary engine, matched with a four-speed manual gearbox, this immaculate hardtop coupe comes complete with its original service and warranty books, owner’s manual, two original keys, some Japanese documentation, an Australian Import Approval, original delivery plastic on the seats and sun visors, and even quaint Japanese seat doilies.
A registration sticker on the window shows the car was last registered in Japan in 1985, before the current owner – a fastidious and passionate Mazda enthusiast and collector – acquired and imported it to Australia in August 2013.
The owner completed a full service, cleaned the fuel system, overhaled all the hydraulics and rear brakes, and fitted new Firestone TZ700 185/70R13 tyres, although the original Bridgestone Skyway Delux B7813 tyres will accompany the car.
The car is still in its factory ‘jewel green’ hue (paint code D8, as featured on the original sales brochure), which has some wear and tear, but the dashboard is described as immaculate and it’s fitted with its factory air-conditioner and original Clarion AM radio and 8-track player.
According to the dealer, the car’s instruments, controls, carpets, boot mat, spare wheel/tyre, jack and tool kit are all in as-new condition – the latter unused, with some of the tools still wrapped in their original wax paper.
